The media like to portray Teesside as a culture less, industrial, hole. So it’s nice to see the witty and charming documentary ‘Sound It Out’ about the areas last surviving independent record shop, portray the area in a positive light.
Director Jeanie Finlay, describes the film as an “observational documentary about men collecting vinyl records and the importance that music plays in all of our lives”. Not only just set in the shop, the documentary follows its regular customers home and gets interesting insights into their lives. The film looks to find what the music means to those people.
Shane, a Status Quo fan underlines his relationship with music as if it is a guilty pleasure “I don’t smoke, I don’t drink and I don’t have a woman so…” just one of the interesting personal views which are expressed throughout the short docufilm.
Tom, the ‘Sound It Out’ manager, expresses his view on music in one very simple statement, “records hold memories”. Something, everyone can relate to whether it is a memory at a gig, a person or a period of time in your life.
