This weekend will be the last chance to catch the Deutsche Borse Photography Prize 2012 at the Photographers Gallery. The four shortlisted artists, include Pieter Hugo, Rinko Kawauchi, John Stezaker and Christopher Williams. Works range from documentary style portraits, to conceptual found objects and photomontage.
This year’s winner was John Stezaker, who was nominated for his recent show at the Whitechapel Gallery. Stezaker works with a range of photographs, illustrations and stills to create his photomontages. He adopts the context of the original image and adapts them to convey new meanings. Coupling male and female identities, Stezaker examines the disjointed nature of the world.
In a radically different vein, Pieter Hugo’s ‘Permanent Error’ exhibit captures the young slum dwellers of Ghana’s capital Accra. Depicted alongside them are the remnants of technological waste, dumped on the landscape, which becomes their ticket to survival.
The winner of the Deutsche Borse Prize is one who makes a considerable contribution to the world of photography that year. The exhibition is well worth a visit, but you’ll need to be quick!
