Yesterday marked the opening of what just might be the definitive David Lynch season at the BFI. Although the director has apparently retired from filmmaking his legacy looks set to last: David Lynch: A Reputation Precedes is just one in a series of event showcasing his work that has popped up over the last couple of years.
The BFI’s offering spans Lynch’s career, with screenings of his more recent projects Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire alongside the ill-received Dune, and the cinematic prequel of his infamous Twin Peaks TV series.
It is not surprising that people are so keen to continue to re-screen Lynch’s films. The director has such a unique style people have begun to call it ‘Lynchian’, referring to his detailed sound design, surreal narrative and dream imagery.
It’s weird, and we like it.
