In The Studio With – Fred Butler (Designer)

Fred Butler, who is showing her autumn winter collection as part of London Fashion Week today, has worked with new musician Charli XCX to create an original soundtrack that perfectly encapsulates her cross-over approach to style and design.

Famed for wearable sculptures and intricate details, Fred has created pieces for the crème de la crème of female musicians like Lady Gaga’s infamous telephone hat as well as pieces for Nicki Minaj and Bjork.

We’ve sat down with the master of colour and texture and quizzed her about her inspirations.

Think-Work-Play: What’s the difference between a good outfit and a great outfit?

Fred Butler: Just the simple fact if someone is really enjoying the experience of wearing it. If you feel boombastic – it shows!

Who’s your favourite person and why?

Wow, what a question!  Jointly my mum and my dad.  My dad is the most patient, conscientious and caring person to an inordinately and inspiring level. My mum has a relentless joy de vivre and a weird next level insight into humanity which I can always quiz when life throws a curve ball.

What can’t you do that you wish you could?

Play a musical instrument / write music. I’m very preoccupied and obsessed with music but have no skill of my own!

What’s the best thing about London?

The people. It’s such a mish-mash mixed up metropolis – I love it. You never know what you’ll see when you turn a corner…

What are your top three influences?

    Colour, humour and positivity.

    Where does inspiration come from?

I’ve got no idea. Anywhere and everywhere but I think a lot of what I saw when I was child has affected me for example my sister left a rainbow sticker in my room so I really think about that now when getting gifts for my nephews and nieces!

Do you agree with keeping birds in cages?

    No : (  I don’t understand this question…

You’ve created loads of outfits / accessories for music videos (most famously Lady Gaga’s telephone hat), but which Hollywood (or non Hollywood film) would you like to have styled and why?

It hasn’t happened yet. I wouldn’t want to change history but I’m more than happy to turn my hand to one in the future!!!

What’s your favourite item of clothing?

My collection of circle disc handbags by threeASFOUR.  I have one in every different colour for each of my monochromatic outfits. They are the ultimate fun accessory and provide me with a shield to hide behind when I’m shy.

Can you take a photo of what you’re wearing today and send it to us?

Kansai Yamamoto jumper I got in Beacon’s Closet in Brooklyn for $20. I think someone made a mistake with the price gun!!!! It’s a rare article and found a very happy home!

Where’s the strangest place you’ve found something beautiful?

Every year of my life I have gone on holiday to the same place in Mallorca with my family. I thought I knew the area inside out until this year, a local friend took us on a boat to a secret blue cave.  It was the most incredible experience.  We swam under the edge of a cliff into a dark void and popped up inside a vast cave lit by sunlight reflecting thru the depths of the sea which somehow made the blue appear UV. Who knew Majorca could be so exotic and cosmic!

Describe the world today in one word?

    Inter-netted.

What do you like most about what you do?

That it’s exactly what I wanted to be doing when I was a child!  It’s only taken 31 years but I’m equally amazed it finally has happened, so I’m ecstatic on a daily basis!

Who or what are your big tips for 2012?

I’m really excited for the debut albums from: Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Jessie Ware, CharliXCX and Nick Mulvey and the return of Esser.

Where do you spend your time “thinking, working and playing”?

    - THINK: where do you come up with your ideas, is there a special place or do random places spring up best ideas – examples?

Yoga!  It’s the only 90 minutes of the week when I’m away from emails and calls so I can turn off and just clear my mind.  My brain can concentrate and my imagination can flow. The tricky thing is that I cant be writing down notes whilst I’m in the middle of a downward dog so I have to try and remember everything till the end of the class!

    - WORK: where is your studio, or work place?

I’m in a massive studio block in Dalston, which is a real hub of incredible and diverse talent. I thrive off being close to so many different practitioners and lovely people. I’m also incredibly nosey and it means that I get to hear music being rehearsed and recorded way ahead of release and see shoots happening before being published – brilliant!!!

    - PLAY: unwind, party – do you have a favourite place?

I love the Shacklewell Arms, which is my local boozer and gig venue. It has the same vibe as the pub I went to at University, everyone goes on a Friday evening and it’s a fun, burly atmosphere! They also have the best events schedule with my favourite acts playing. Its a great place to bump into people I don’t otherwise get the chance to arrange to meet.

Pernod Absinthe has a rich history of inspiring creativity and originality, which is why shortly after 1805 it became the most popular aperitif in France. In the mid 19th Century, L’Heure Verte (The Green Hour) became a cultural phenomenon in Paris and every evening between 5 and 7 o’clock cafés all over Paris were flooded with customers clambering for a Pernod.
